There WILL be Haters

Turning Nay-Sayers into Motivation

In life, there are many hard truths, and one of the most profound is this: there will always be doubters and haters. This reality becomes even more apparent when you choose to work in sports as a woman. The barriers you face aren’t just societal; they can also come from those closest to you. You’ll hear your career aspirations dismissed as “dreams,” “unrealistic,” or “not stable.”

These comments sting, especially when they come from the people who are supposed to support you most. The truth is, that many of these naysayers project their own insecurities. Perhaps they regret not chasing their dreams, or they envy the passion and excitement your career choice brings. It’s easier for them to criticize than to confront their own fears and missed opportunities. But you? You’re different. You’re courageous enough to step into a field that hasn’t historically welcomed women with open arms.

It’s no secret that the world hasn’t fully adjusted to seeing women as power figures in sports—or in many career fields, for that matter. And yes, it sucks. Facing sexism and doubt can feel isolating and exhausting. But here’s the good news: every bit of criticism, every condescending comment, and every doubter presents you with an incredible opportunity.

If you’ve experienced this firsthand, congratulations—you’ve just earned the most powerful motivation possible: proving people wrong.

Doubt is fuel. Every time someone questions your abilities or undermines your potential, they hand you a reason to push harder. When you channel that energy into your work, your passion becomes unstoppable. You don’t just aim to meet expectations; you aim to shatter them.

Working in sports as a woman means you’re paving the way for others. You’re not just showing up; you’re standing out. Your presence challenges outdated norms, and your success redefines what’s possible for the next generation of women in sports.

For me personally, I’ve seen everyone from family members to boyfriends slide doubtful comments about my career. Men find it hard to accept your job around successful athletes, and see you as a cleat chaser, while Grandpa doesn’t think sports journalism is a real job for a woman…

While it’s true that some of the doubters may be close to you, it’s equally true that there are people out there who will celebrate your ambitions. Seek out mentors, allies, and peers who uplift you. Surround yourself with those who see your potential and encourage your growth.

In sports, teamwork is everything. The same applies to your career. Your support system will remind you of your worth on the tough days and cheer for you on the good ones. Together, you’ll prove that women belong not just in the stands, but in the press boxes, the front offices, the sidelines, and beyond.

Embrace Your Role as a Trailblazer. Every time you overcome a hurdle or silence a doubter, you’re making history. You’re proving that women in sports are not just possible—they’re powerful. And with every step forward, you’re inspiring others to follow in your footsteps.

Yes, there will be challenges. Yes, there will be doubters. But there will also be triumphs, breakthroughs, and moments that make all the struggle worth it.

You’re not just proving people wrong; you’re proving yourself right.
