OVERCOME AND EMPOWER
December 24, 20246 WAYS TO OVERCOME AND EMPOWER
The sports industry is as thrilling as it is competitive. For women, the challenges can sometimes feel doubled due to lingering stereotypes and barriers. But breaking through these barriers isn’t just possible—it’s necessary for reshaping the industry. I made this to start voicing my advice, and what has worked or hasn’t in my career thus far.
Starting your path in the sports industry is scary. Unlike other degrees or careers, there is not a definite path of studying, tests, or schooling to go through. It is an open road for you to pave yourself.
Here’s how to overcome the initial struggles of being a woman in sports and take proactive steps to carve out opportunities for yourself!
1. Embrace Your Unique Perspective
As a woman in sports, you bring a perspective that can add depth to how stories are told and how audiences connect with the game. Instead of seeing your gender as a challenge, see it as a unique asset. Emphasize your skills, whether it’s storytelling, strategy, or social media expertise, and be unapologetic about the value you bring to the table.
2. Build Your Network Strategically
Connections are everything in sports media. Attend games, industry events, and networking mixers. Engage with industry professionals on platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram. Don’t hesitate to reach out to people whose work you admire—most are happy to share advice or insights. Remember, meaningful relationships often start with a simple introduction.
3. Master the Art of the Cold Email
Waiting for job postings can limit your opportunities. Proactively reaching out to teams, organizations, and professionals can open doors you didn’t know existed. Here’s a blueprint for crafting the perfect email:
- Subject Line: Keep it concise and specific (e.g., “Aspiring Social Media Manager Excited to Learn from [Team Name]”).
- Introduction: Introduce yourself briefly and mention why you’re reaching out.
- Personal Connection: Highlight something specific about their work or organization that inspires you.
- Your Value: Briefly explain your skills and how they can benefit them.
- Call to Action: Politely ask for a chance to connect or inquire about opportunities.
4. Be Willing to Take Risks
Pursuing unconventional paths can feel intimidating, but that’s often where the biggest opportunities lie. Every position I have ever gotten came from an email or conversation, rather than a open application. Pitch creative ideas, ask for informational interviews, and take roles that may not be exactly what you envisioned but offer growth potential. The more you put yourself out there, the more likely you are to find unexpected opportunities.
5. Cultivate Resilience
In any competitive industry, rejection is part of the process. Stay persistent and don’t let “no” discourage you. Instead, view setbacks as stepping stones to refine your skills, broaden your network, and better understand the industry. Confidence and resilience are powerful tools in breaking through barriers.
6. Support Other Women in the Industry
Building a network of supportive women can provide mentorship, camaraderie, and collaboration. Celebrate each other’s successes and advocate for one another whenever possible. Together, we can help pave the way for future generations of women in sports.
Being a woman in sports isn’t without its challenges, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to make a lasting impact. By embracing your perspective, taking initiative, and persisting through challenges, you can thrive and help redefine the industry. Remember: every step you take opens doors not just for yourself but for others who follow.
If you’ve got your own tips or success stories, I’d love to hear them.
At the end of the day, those who hustle harder will make it farther.
